Basic “Do”s and “Don’t”s

  • Remember to bring all your paperwork, payslips etc. with you when you go in to finalize your car deal

  • Calculate what you can really afford to spend on a car (use Edmunds affordability calculator)

  • Negotiate the price of the vehicle and not the monthly payment

  • Make sure you’re happy with the car you’re getting before sign the contract and drive it off the lot

  • Take the time to do your pricing research online before doing any kind of negotiation

  • Make sure you check the figures on the purchase contract to make sure everything is what you agreed on

  • Get your credit scores from before you apply for financing

  • Go in to negotiate or close the deal when you’re tired or hungry

  • Fall in love with a car and buy it on the spot

  • Let the salesman pressure you into making a decision before you’re ready

  • Allow the dealer to be your only source for financing

  • Lie about your income to qualify for a loan (they will find out and you’ll probably end up lowering your credit score and not getting a car loan)

  • Argue with the dealer about what’s ‘fair’ or how you think they’re trying to rip you off
